| Welcome to Turk's E.H.K.O.
This site is dedicated to all backcountry enthusiasts, unsung expeditions, and the routes less traveled. The geographical focus of this site will be Northern Ontario provincial parks and surrounding area. Additional areas may be added as the site grows. A secondary focus of this site is to allow me a place to share my many expedition adventures and gather the trip logs, gear reviews and many projects I have been involved with into a single website. The goals of this site are three-fold: - to share my love of camping hammocks, the skills and techniques associated with 'hangers'. - to feature and promote little-known gear manufacturers and their bleeding-edge technical achievements that are vastly ahead of the mainstream corporate outdoor equipment monster. - to collect and share trips and ideas on multi-day treks into northern Ontario's backcountry. This site promotes light-weight and ultra-light hiking philosophy as well as the ethics of "Leave No Trace". The Advertisements on this site are UNPAID ads, for companies I personally feel deserve your attention and your business. This is a FREE service I offer to promote only those with outstanding quality, innovation, and craftsmanship. The products and manufacturers I promote on this site are represented 100% B.S.-FREE. No buzz words, no fancy marketing, no undue hype. Definitions and Terms: The following terms and definitions I have developed to communicate easier some topics and concepts found throughout this site. You don't have to agree with my definitions or usage of these terms. If you prefer your own semantics, then substitute them at your own discretion. If you are still not satisfied then feel free to flame me in the user Forums. Freedom of speech is your right. ... as is ignorance. Backcountry - My own personal context as it applies to this site is any remote area of Northern Ontario. I have characterized backcountry as any area in which poor or inaccurate mapping, little or no road access and distance between resupply points present special challenges to a hiker or paddler. Expedition - Any trip into the backcountry,(as defined above) for a duration greater than three nights or distance greater than 50km. I will also include any trip in which large portions of your route cannot be accessed by emergency Air, Land or Water response crews. Sorry... no day-hikers! get to be on expeditions. Stop using the word now to describe how you spent an afternoon! Lightweight & Ultralight - In context: A total gear weight applied specifically to hiking in Northern Ontario. I have established these weights of my own sound judgement, taking into account many factors to produce my own set of numbers. I encourage you to do the same. I refuse to accept that these two terms can be defined by some exact number that is magically all encompassing geographically, and somehow contends against any and all weather conditions. Don't buy into mainstream hype. Going ultralight is more a concept and a way of thinking than it is an exact numerical representation of pack weight. For more of my rantings have a look at My Philosophy page. Please let me know if you experience any page errors or page formatting problems especially with text display, or overlapping images. Contact me: ryan.ca@gmail.com I am very much a novice in terms of web design... but give me a break, I am not a keyboard puncher, have never worked in an office, and don't own a suit...
